Weighted GradeCalculator
Calculate your current grade from weighted categories or assignments, see how much of the course is complete, and estimate the average needed across remaining work.
Grade calculator highlights
Weighted categories vs points-based grading
Use this weighted grade calculator when each category or assignment has a percentage weight toward the course. If your course instead adds raw points earned and divides by total points possible, convert those totals to a percentage first or use your institution’s grade system.
As a current grade calculator, the result is a weighted average grade across the completed weight—not necessarily the final course grade shown by a school portal.
How to use the Grade Calculator
- 1Enter an earned percentage and course weight for each completed item or category.
- 2Add as many completed rows as needed. Leave unfinished work out of the rows.
- 3Optionally enter a target overall grade to see the average needed across the remaining weight.
- 4Select Calculate grade. After the first result, valid edits update it automatically.
Weighted grade formula
For each completed row, multiply its score by its weight. Add those products, then divide by the total completed weight:
Current grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)
The contribution already earned toward the final course grade is Σ(score × weight) ÷ 100.
If a target is supplied and less than 100% is complete:
Needed = (target − contribution) ÷ ((100 − weight) ÷ 100)
Important assumption
The current grade is normalized across the work entered, so weights do not need to total 100% yet. The rows represent completed work only, and their combined weight cannot exceed 100%.
Worked example
Suppose completed work includes 80% at 20% weight, 90% at 30% weight, and 70% at 10% weight. Completed weight is 60%, earned contribution is 50%, and normalized current grade is 83.33%.
For an 85% target, the needed average across remaining 40% is 87.50%.
Targets above 100% & extra credit
A required average above 100% is shown as a mathematical result. Scores up to 200% are accepted to support extra credit and are never silently reduced to 100%.
